Map Fanatics: New York City

As you’d expect, everyone who works at The Future Mapping Company is a bit of a map fanatic, so we were delighted to read about some fellow obsessives.

  • Owners of Fair Winds Antique Maps, Joseph Gonzalez and Ralph Magnus’s New York apartment is packed to the gills with maps. But not any old map – they house a collection of nearly 500 maps that all show Hispaniola & The West Indies (Hispaniola is now split between the Dominican Republic and Haiti).

    Their collection includes what is believed to be the oldest printed map of Hispaniola, produced by Bordoni in Italy in 1528; and an extremely rare 1634 map of the West Indies by Dutch cartographer Willem Janszoon Blaeu, one of only 10 in the world.

    So precious is their collection that they keep the blinds drawn to prevent any damage!
