What does our World Geology Map show?

Our World Geology map is a fantastic example of the extrordinary beauty of mapped data, but what exactly does it show?

1. ROCK STRATA

It shows the different rock strata that makes up the surface of our planet, Earth. These have developed over the 4.67 billion years of our planets' life and are represented onshore and on the sea bed by a stunning array of colours.
Lighter colours like yellows and greens portray younger rock sedimentary, while the older is depicted with darker reds and pinks.
It’s probably one of the only times you'll seen a key on a map that highlights elements in millions (Ma) of years!
The onshore areas are finished with a gloss varnish to help differentiate from the sea bed.

2. FAULT LINES

It shows all the major continental fault lines and oceanic fracture zones. These have resulted from the force of plate tectonics.
Please take read of our blog on plate tectonics for further insight.

3. HOT SPOTS

Our map highlights the 45 major ‘hotspots’ of the Earth’s surface. These are the areas where volcanism is at its most active. Surprisingly these are not necessarily close to tectonic plate boundaries.

4. SUBDUCTION ZONES

These are our earth’s ‘major crash scenes’, they occur when two of the planet’s tectonic plates meet. One plate is forced under another due to the gravity of the mantle.
